On the morning of 28 May, a legacy vehicle borne IED detonated near the Haditha-Baiji Road in Barwana Sub-District, located in northeastern Haditha District. The incident occurred while Hashd al-Ashairi PMF personnel were inspecting the vehicle during a routine operation. Two PMF members were killed, and another was wounded as a result. Despite extensive CF training as part of the Build, Partner, Capacity Program, functional skills in clearing explosive remnants of war (ERW) and other explosive hazards remain an enduring shortfall amongst local PMF and many ISF units.
Inherent threats surrounding ERW and unexploded ordnance (UXO) are frequently reported in Anbar Province. Since the beginning of 2019, 19 casualty producing ERW detonations have been reported. A similar incident was reported in Rutbah District. On 4 April, a legacy vehicle borne IED detonation was reported in the Anaz area of western Rutbah District. Most sources suggested three individuals were killed, while one other was wounded and later transferred to a Jordanian hospital. Later reporting from an unnamed security source claimed the legacy device detonated after truffle collectors attempted to open the doors of the abandoned vehicle.
