Between the evening of 26 January and morning of 27 January, IS executed multiple significant attacks affecting diverse areas along the Tigris River Valley extending from suburbs of Mosul down to southern Salah ad Din Province. In total, at least 10 security personnel and civilians were killed and over a dozen others were wounded. The deadliest incidents included coordinated IED attacks near Shirqat that killed four and wounded 11 others. Some degree of coordination cannot be discounted, particularly with regards to a set of attacks near Samarra and Balad. In conjunction with other increases in IS activity in Diyala, this uptick in activity is assessed to represent IS responses to recent increases in security measures affecting hotspots in Kirkuk Province. Geographical fluctuations along these lines have been commonly noted on a historic basis.
