Late on the night of 11 August, approximately six IS gunmen targeted an outpost manned by 1st Battalion, 18th Brigade, 5th Federal Police Division, in the vicinity of Ali Saray village, a Kakai Kurdish population center located southwest of Daquq in southern Kirkuk province. Two Federal Police members were killed, and two others were wounded. Suburbs of Daquq are historically active. Recent activity was highlighted by a mortar attack that preceded a deadly checkpoint incident on 24 July, which killed as many as nine civilians. The deadly attack on 11 August stands out as the latest example of IS promoting well-planned attacks as opposed to a greater number of less sophisticated attacks.
