On the morning of 20 May, local sources were reporting that dozens of workers employed at an international oil company gathered in front of the Basra Oil Company headquarters in west Basra city, denouncing layoffs recently implemented by the company. Protesters called on the Basra Oil Company to intervene in order to maintain employment with reduced salaries or enable resumption of regular work. Protesters threatened to escalate their action if their demands are not met.
There were no traffic disruptions reported initially but operations should remain aware of the elevated likelihood of further protests near the Basra Oil Company offices and the oil facilities in the West Qurna 1 area over the near term. Further details will be provided in later updates.
