On the morning of 22 April, local sources reported that a small number of workers employed at an international security company gathered for a peaceful demonstration in the Burjisiyah area, after the company decided to discharge them citing the coronavirus crisis. One source indicated that the demonstration was held in the vicinity of the Majal Business Park.
Protesters claimed that the company failed to comply with governor’s orders, which prevent companies in Basra from discharging workers during to the coronavirus epidemic, and called on the Basra Oil Company to intervene. No significant impact on traffic was reported initially, but the risk of access disruptions in the area will be somewhat elevated over the near term.
